Brief description of the plants:
The seven plants in this tincture come from different botanical families and regions—ranging from Asian highland herbs to South American vines. Andrographis (fam.: Acanthaceae) is an annual, herbaceous plant with lanceolate leaves and small white flowers with purple spots. Scutellaria baicalensis (fam.: Lamiaceae) is a perennial member of the mint family with violet, helmet-shaped flowers and robust roots. Reynoutria japonica (fam.: Polygonaceae) is a fast-growing perennial knotweed with hollow stems and heart-shaped leaves. Uncaria rhynchophylla and Uncaria tomentosa (fam.: Rubiaceae) are climbing plants with hook-shaped growths, from which the name “cat’s claw” derives. Salvia miltiorrhiza (fam.: Lamiaceae) is an aromatic labiate with red roots, while Eleutherococcus senticosus (fam.: Araliaceae) grows as a shrub with palmate leaves and small black berries. What they have in common is their adaptability and the production of secondary plant compounds—in contrast, however, are their growth forms: ranging from herbaceous to woody to climbing.

Special features:
Uncaria tomentosa forms hook-shaped outgrowths with which it clings to trees like a claw—hence the name “cat’s claw.” Salvia miltiorrhiza contains natural pigments that give its roots an intense red color—a botanical characteristic rarely found in the plant world. Andrographis, on the other hand, is considered one of the most bitter plants of all; its taste is so pronounced that it is known in Asia as the “King of Bitter.”

Scutellaria baicalensis exhibits an unusual trait among the Lamiaceae family: it does not store its bioactive flavonoids in the leaves, but concentrates them in the root. Reynoutria japonica is one of the few plants that produce resveratrol in significant quantities—a secondary plant compound also found in red grapes and receiving special attention in botany. Uncaria rhynchophylla contains complexly structured alkaloids that are valued in traditional Asian herbal medicine and differ significantly from those of its South American relatives.

Eleutherococcus senticosus is one of the so-called adaptogens—plants characterized by their exceptional resilience to environmental stress. They thrive even under extreme conditions and are regarded as a symbol of botanical robustness and adaptability.

History and Traditional Significance of the Seven Plants

The plants in this tincture each have a long history in traditional herbalism. Andrographis has been used in Ayurvedic and Chinese medicine for centuries. Baikal skullcap is one of the most important herbs in East Asia and is traditionally valued there. Cat’s claw has its origins in South American ethnobotany and has been used there for generations. Salvia miltiorrhiza and Eleutherococcus senticosus are integral parts of Chinese herbalism. Reynoutria japonica is widespread in Japan and Korea, where it is traditionally used as a wild vegetable and an ingredient in herbal formulations. Together, these plants represent global diversity, botanical depth, and a long history of using roots, leaves, and bark.

Why use it as a tincture?

The tincture concentrates soluble plant compounds and makes them available for longer. Alcohol serves as an extractant and preservative and has the major advantage of extracting water- and fat-soluble ingredients from the plant. These, in turn, are absorbed quickly and directly through the mucous membranes, enabling high bioavailability and rapid onset of action—ideal even for digestive issues or impaired absorption. An alcohol-free version often cannot extract this range of substances in the same way.

After adding the plant minerals (=mineral extract) to the alcohol extract, the alcohol content of the finished tincture is reduced to 65% vol.

Buhner Protocol 2 (green label)

Recommended Use: Application & Dosage

Take 25 drops 3 times daily, diluted in a little water (150 ml)
OR mix the entire daily dose of 150 drops in approx. 500 ml of water and drink throughout the day
For optimal results, it is recommended to take this for a period of at least 4 months.
100 ml contains approximately 2200 drops.

Tip: Let the drops sit in your mouth for a few moments before swallowing.

Buhner Protocol 1: The recommended daily intake (60 drops) contains an alcoholic extract of 260 mg of Baikal skullcap root and 170 mg each of Andrographis and Japanese knotweed root, plus mineral extract after calcination.

Buhner Protocol 2: The recommended daily intake (60 drops) contains an alcoholic extract of 170 mg of red root sage and 130 mg each of Indian morning star, cat’s claw, and taiga root, plus a mineral extract obtained after calcination.
