Description
Ashwaganda, also known as sleeping berry, winter cherry or Indian ginseng, belongs to the nightshade family.
It feels most at home in dry regions and grows mainly in India, North Africa and the Middle East. Preferably, the plant grows on sandy to gritty soils. Meanwhile, the ashwaganda can be found in large parts of Africa - moreover, due to its ever-increasing popularity, the plant is even cultivated in private yards.
Ashwaganda is a perennial herbaceous plant that can usually grow between 25-80cm high. Its leaves have an oval-shaped and elongated form. The flowers that ashwaganda develops are inconspicuous and of greenish-yellow color. After flowering, the plant evolves striking red-glowing berries, but they are not edible.
Funnily enough, Ashwaganda means "smelling of horses", because the roots of the plant strongly remind of horses.
