Description
Artemisia annua is a member of the composite plant family. The plant is also known to many as "annual mugwort".
Artemisia annua is native to warm summer rainfall areas from China through northern India and Iraq to southeastern Europe. In Germany, Artemisia-annua grows along the Elbe River.
As the name "annual mugwort" suggests, it is an annual plant that can grow to a height of up to 2 meters in summer. Although its stem is usually completely bare, it has many side shoots that produce yellow, cup-shaped flowers when in bloom. In addition, its leaves resemble bright green feathers.
Worth mentioning: The best-known ingredient in annual mugwort is the so-called artemisin, the extraction of which helped Chinese pharmacologist Youyou Tu win the Nobel Prize in 2015.
Like 4000 other plants, Andrographis paniculata, also known as "Kalmegh", belongs to the acanthus family. In addition, the plant is often called "King of bitter", because the ingredients of the plant give a strong bitter taste.
Originally the Andrographis comes from India and Sri Lanka, but is now also found in Malaysia, China, Central America, the Caribbean and Mauritius. In its native countries of India and Sri Lanka, the plant has been widely used and highly valued for centuries. The herb is found mainly in shady, moist places.
Andrographis is an upright growing annual plant with square stems, sharply winged in the upper part. The plant with the dark green stem can reach a growth height of 30cm to 1m.
Good to know: During the Second World War, Andrographis was used with success to treat amoebic dysentery in Southeast Asia.
Just like peppermint, thyme or basil, Chinese skullcap belongs to the labiates family.
The plant is native to the east of Asia and grows for example in China, Mongolia, in Japan and in Korea. The plant can also be found in North America and is now cultivated in Europe.
The plant looks very beautiful and attracts attention in the months from July to September with its green leaves and purple flowers. The shape of the flowers reminds of small helmets, just as they were worn in the Middle Ages. The growth height of the Chinese skullcap is between 20 and 30cm. The plant grows beautifully bushy and strikes with its numerous leaves and flowers.
The Indians took advantage of the Chinese skullcap and used it just as they used valerian in Europe.
Most people probably know the dandelion. It belongs to the dandelion species, which belongs to the composite plant family.
The dandelion grows naturally in the moderate climate zones of the northern hemisphere, but originally comes from western Asia and Europe. It is most likely to be found on meadows, ditches, and forest edges - as long as it is sunny or half-shady.
The growth of the dandelion is herbaceous. The perennial plant can only grow between 10 to 30 cm high, but its root is very long and reaches up to one meter in the depth. Directly above the ground, the dandelion leaves are formed, which grow up to 25cm and are strongly toothed. In spring, the dandelion blooms with its bright yellow basket flowers, whose smell reminds of honey. The flowers open in the morning and close in the evening.
Interesting, especially for vegans, could be that you can make a honey alternative from the dandelion.
Rosemary also belongs to the labiates. More precisely, it belongs to the genus Rosmarinus within the above-mentioned plant family.
Rosemary is a typical Mediterranean herb, which also has its origins in the Mediterranean region. However, because rosemary is a very popular seasoning herb, it is now widespread all over the world. However, it feels most at home in warm and sunny places and hardly grows in cool places.
Rosemary is a shrub that can reach a height of two metres. Its leaves are very narrow and elongated - similar to spruce needles. These leaves contain most of the odours and flavours for which rosemary is so sought after. In the period from late winter to spring, the shrub produces its light purple flowers.
Have you ever heard of the German name for rosemary? It is "Brautkraut" (bridal herb) and comes from Greek antiquity - the reason for this is its connection with the Greek goddess of love "Aphrodite".
The liquorice root is a member of the papilionaceous family. The papilionaceous plants form in turn a subgroup of the legume family.
The plant's area of origin is the West Asian region. It is still cultivated there on a large scale. However, liquorice also grows wild and is cultivated in the Mediterranean region.
Liquorice is a perennial, hardy plant that can grow between 60 and 200 cm high. Its root is long and widely branched - thus has many secondary roots. The liquorice leaves pinnate and elliptical in shape. The flowers of the perennial white-purple and develop into legumes after flowering.
By the way: The candy “liquorice” takes its name from the liquorice root, which is one of the main ingredients in the production of the former.
