Chamomile, Haronga bark, lemon balm, caraway, and Liquorice root—A portrait of the plant

Botanical names:
Matricaria chamomilla (chamomile), Haronga madagascariensis (haronga bark), Melissa officinalis (lemon balm), Carum carvi (caraway), Glycyrrhiza glabra (liquorice root).

Common names:

Chamomile: True chamomile, camel flower
Lemon balm: Lemon balm, heart balm
Liquorice root: Licorice Root, Sweet Root

Brief description of the plants:
The five plants in this tincture come from different botanical families and combine European herbal traditions with tropical bark knowledge. Chamomile (Family: Asteraceae) is an annual composite flower with white ray florets and yellow tubular florets that prefers to grow in sunny, loose soil in Europe. Lemon balm (Family: Lamiaceae) is a perennial herb with aromatic, heart-shaped leaves and a characteristic lemon scent; it is native to the eastern Mediterranean region. Caraway (family: Apiaceae) is a biennial plant with pinnate leaves and characteristic umbel flowers that has been cultivated in Europe for centuries. Liquorice root (family: Fabaceae) forms robust, branched root systems and thrives in warm regions of Eurasia. St. John’s wort (Family: Hypericaceae), on the other hand, is native to Madagascar and is characterized by its distinctive, reddish bark. What these plants have in common is their pronounced aroma and variety of phytochemicals, while they differ significantly in origin, growth habit, and climatic requirements.

Special features:

Chamomile: Its flower heads have a hollow receptacle—a botanical characteristic that clearly distinguishes it from similar species.
Harong bark: The tree develops an intensely red-colored bark, which has traditionally been used as a natural dye in some regions of Madagascar.
Lemon balm: As early as the Middle Ages, it was considered a “friend of bees”—its name is derived from the Greek word for “honeybee.”
Caraway: Archaeological findings show that caraway was already used as a spice in the Neolithic era.
Liquorice root: Its natural sweetener can taste up to 50 times sweeter than table sugar—a prized characteristic since ancient times.

History and traditional significance of the Five Plants

All five plants have a long history in traditional botany. Chamomile is one of the best-known European cultivated plants and was already described in antiquity. Lemon balm was cultivated in monastery gardens and was considered an aromatic plant for bees. Caraway is one of the oldest known spices in Central Europe and was used both in cooking and in traditional herbal preparations. Liquorice root was a sought-after commodity in the Mediterranean region and the Middle East, prized for its distinctive flavor. Harong bark, on the other hand, has its origins in Malagasy traditions, where the tree has long been known as a useful and cultivated plant. Together, these plants symbolize diversity, deep roots, and a long history of working with herbs, barks, and roots.

Key ingredients

The plants used contain a wide variety of natural ingredients. Relevant groups include:

Flavonoids (e.g., apigenin in chamomile)
Essential oils (e.g., citral in lemon balm, carvone in caraway)
Tannins (e.g., in harong bark and lemon balm)
Saponins (e.g., glycyrrhizin in Liquorice root)
Bitter compounds (e.g., in harong bark)

The content of these substances is subject to natural fluctuations.

Our Sagrusan "After‑Meal Comfort" tincture

Plant parts used:
For our compound tincture, we use organic chamomile, harong bark, organic lemon balm, organic caraway, and organic Liquorice root.

Manufacturing instructions:
Our compound tincture is carefully produced in our Austrian facility according to the alchemical principles of Paracelsus. This process allows us to extract a broad spectrum of the plant’s natural compounds.

Quality features:

Vegan and free from artificial additives.
Free of preservatives.
Free of artificial colors.
Bottled in high-quality amber glass (100 ml) for optimal protection.

Why use it as a tincture?

The tincture concentrates soluble plant compounds and makes them available for longer. Alcohol serves as an extractant and preservative and has the great advantage of extracting water- and fat-soluble compounds from the plant. These, in turn, are absorbed quickly and directly through the mucous membranes—ideal even in cases of impaired absorption. An alcohol-free version often cannot extract this range of compounds in the same way.
