Description
Artemisia annua is a member of the composite plant family. The plant is also known to many as "annual mugwort".
Artemisia-annua is native to warm summer rainfall areas from China through northern India and Iraq to southeastern Europe. In Germany, Artemisia-annua grows along the Elbe River.
As the name "annual mugwort" suggests, it is an annual plant that can grow to a height of up to 2 meters in summer. Although its stem is usually completely bare, it has many side shoots that produce yellow, cup-shaped flowers when in bloom. In addition, its leaves resemble bright green feathers.
Worth mentioning: The best-known ingredient in annual mugwort is the so-called artemisin, the extraction of which helped Chinese pharmacologist Youyou Tu win the Nobel Prize in 2015.
The stevia plant, also known as sweet herb or sweet leaf, belongs to the composite family and is, for example, related to Artemisia annua.
Originally, the stevia plant comes from South America, more precisely from Brazil and Paraguay. There it grows in the highlands and was already highly valued by the native inhabitants. In the 16th century, the Spanish brought the stevia plant to Europe, since then it is also known and popular in our country.
The stevia plant is a non-hardy bush that can reach a height of 120cm. The stems are strongly branched and the toothed, dark green leaves hang on them. The small white flowers of the bush are beautiful but quite unimpressive.
Did you know that Stevia is especially known for its extremely sweet taste, which is the reason the plant was already used by the indigenous people to sweeten food and drinks?
