Mistletoe & Hawthorn Tincture – A Portrait of the Plants Contained

Brief description of the plant:
Mistletoe and hawthorn belong to different botanical families, yet both demonstrate remarkable adaptability and a long history in Central European botany. Mistletoe (Family: Santalaceae) is an evergreen semi-parasite that grows on deciduous and coniferous trees. It forms spherical bushes with forked shoots, leathery leaves, and white berries. Its range extends from Scandinavia to Southern Europe. Hawthorn (Family: Rosaceae) is a thorny shrub with lobed leaves and delicate white flowers that thrives primarily in hedges and forest edges. It is native to all of Europe and produces red drupes in the fall. Both plants are robust, hardy, and deeply rooted in the European landscape—whether high up in treetops or as part of historic hedge structures.

Special features:
Mistletoe grows without direct contact with the ground—it anchors itself in the wood of its host plant via special suckers and forms spherical bushes whose branches precisely indicate the plant’s age: each fork represents one year of growth. Hawthorn (Crataegus oxyacantha syn. Crataegus laevigata) is impressive in a different way: Its flowers always have two to three styles, which remain visible even on the small red fruits—a botanical detail that distinguishes it from other hawthorn species and has earned it the name “two-styled hawthorn.”

History and traditional significance of the two plants

Both plants have a long history in mythology and folklore. Mistletoe was already revered by Celtic druids and was considered a symbol of the heavens, as it appears to grow “rootless” in trees. Hawthorn was planted as a protective shrub in the Middle Ages and was a staple of monastery gardens. Its flowers were seen as a sign of renewal and were used in folk customs.

Why take it as a tincture?

The tincture concentrates soluble plant compounds and makes them available for longer. Alcohol serves as an extractant and preservative and has the major advantage of extracting water- and fat-soluble ingredients from the plant. These, in turn, are absorbed quickly and directly through the mucous membranes, enabling high bioavailability and rapid onset of action—ideal even for digestive issues or impaired absorption. An alcohol-free version often cannot extract this range of substances in the same way.

Product information: Ingredients of the drops

Organic alcohol (80% vol.)
Alpine spring water
Alcoholic extract of organic mistletoe and organic Hawthorn leaves and flowers.
Aqueous mineral extract obtained after calcination of the plant components used.

Once the plant minerals (i.e. mineral extract) have been added to the alcohol extract, the alcohol content of the finished tincture is reduced to 65% vol.

Recommended dosage: Application & Dosage

Take 30 drops twice daily, diluted in a little water (150 ml)
OR add 60 drops to 500 ml of water and drink throughout the day
100 ml contains approximately 2200 drops.

Tip: Hold the drops in your mouth for a few moments before swallowing.

The recommended daily intake (60 drops) contains an alcoholic extract of 205 mg of organic mistletoe and 125 mg of organic Hawthorn leaves and flowers, with mineral extract obtained via calcination.

Important information about this food supplement

Food supplements are not a substitute for a balanced, varied diet and a healthy lifestyle.
Do not exceed the recommended daily intake.
Keep out of reach of small children.
Store in a dry place away from direct light. This also applies to bottles that have already been opened. A dark cupboard is best for storage.
A natural sediment may form. In this case, give the tincture a quick shake before taking it.
It is not recommended to take this product during pregnancy or whilst breastfeeding.
