Description
The Siberian ginseng, which is still quite unknown in our latitudes, belongs to the Aralia family.
Originally, the plant comes from Siberia, which is why it is called "Siberian ginseng". Meanwhile, the plant also grows naturally in eastern Russia, Korea, Japan, as well as eastern China. Especially in mountainous regions, which are rich in conifers, the plant is mainly found.
Botanically, the Siberian Ginseng is a shrub that can grow at least 1.5 meters and at maximum 7 meters high. The deciduous shrub has a widely branched root system with a large number of root fibers. The leaves are mint green and oval shaped and the flowers are usually yellow in colour.
Have you already heard that the Siberian Ginseng was used by Russian athletes as a support in the 1984 Olympics?
Lavender belongs to the labiates family, which also includes the mint and sage.
Lavender is a half-shrub, which originally comes from the coastal region of the Mediterranean. It prefers dry and warm hillsides to grow there. However, the true lavender is very popular and therefore, was introduced and cultivated in many areas. The shrub grows best in sunny, warm locations with fairly nutrient-poor soils.
Lavender grows quite compact and forms erect, strongly branched sprouts. The well-known plant grows perennially and reaches a height of up to one meter. The plant is recognized by its needle-shaped, gray-coloured leaves and even more by its purple flowers.
Do you know where the name "lavender" comes from? Back in ancient times, the Romans used the plant to make good-smelling bath additives. Thus, the name stems from the Italian word "lavare", which means "to wash".
Melissa, belonging to the labiates family, is also known as "lemon balm".
Lemon balm originated in the eastern Mediterranean region. Since it is so popular, it is now cultivated in many countries. Thus, it can now be found in the Mediterranean region, in large parts of Europe and in Western Asia. For its growth, lemon balm needs sunny and warm places with well-drained, relatively moist soil.
The popular plant grows perennial and herbaceous, has a strong rootstock and spreads enormously fast. The plant grows between 40 to 90 cm high and has thin, upright growing stems. Its leaves are light green, have toothed edges and are slightly heart-shaped. On the leaves are the oil glands that give the plant its characteristic scent of lemon. Not until the second year do the white, yellow or blue flowers of the plant form.
The name is probably derived from the honey bee, as lemon balm was once grown as a pasture for bees. Indeed, the Greek word for honey bee is "melissa".
The passionflower belongs to the passionflower family, which includes more than 530 types, and furthermore some cultivated varieties.
Almost all species of passionflower are native to North, Central, and South America. However, there are also species native to Australia, Asia and Madagascar - but the plant is not found growing naturally in Europe. They prefer to grow in bright, sunny places with moist soil.
Passionflowers are perennial, herbaceous or woody, and grow mostly as climbing plants, rarely as shrubs or trees. The height of growth can differ from 50 cm to 4 meters. Their stem leaves are alternate and stemmed, but vary depending on the type. The flowers of the passion flower are very eye-catching and are composed of several petals. If the flowers are pollinated, the edible passion fruits are developed, which botanically belong to the berries.
Why the passionflower got its name? In Christianity, its flowers are a sign of the Passion of Christ because of their appearance.
Hemp, to many also known as "cannabis", belongs to the hemp family.
Since the hemp plant is an extremely flexible plant, it grows everywhere where the climate allows it. However, its place of origin is probably the Himalayan region, but this has not been proven yet. In addition, the hemp is also found on the border between China, Russia and Mongolia. It is even believed that the hemp plant was the first plant to be cultivated by the human.
The hemp is an annual, erect plant with a rapid growth until it reaches a height of about four meters. The leaves of the plant are toothed, making them easily recognizable, but the flowers of the plant are very unimpressive. The seeds of the plant, also called "hemp nuts", are edible and have become increasingly popular in the kitchen in the recent years.
Did you know that the first paper in the world was made out of mulberry tree and hemp?
