Milk Thistle & Turmeric—A Portrait of the Plant

Botanical names:
Silybum marianum (milk thistle), Curcuma longa (turmeric).

Common names:

Milk thistle: milk thistle, Mary’s herb
Turmeric: Yellow root, saffron root

Brief description of the plant:
Milk thistle and turmeric belong to different plant families and exhibit a fascinating combination of Mediterranean thistle vigor and tropical root diversity. Milk thistle (Family: Asteraceae) is a robust, annual or biennial plant with distinctive white-veined leaves and purple flower heads. It thrives in warm regions of Europe and Western Asia and is known for its robust appearance. Turmeric (Family: Zingiberaceae), on the other hand, is a perennial, herbaceous plant with long, lanceolate leaves and an intensely orange rhizome. Originally native to South Asia, it is now cultivated worldwide in tropical regions. While milk thistle stands out for its spiny structure, turmeric impresses with its vibrantly colored root—both plants are united by their adaptability and their traditional significance in botany.

Special features:
Milk thistle produces leaves with striking white markings, which, according to an old legend, are said to have been created by a drop of milk that fell from the sky. Turmeric, on the other hand, has been used for centuries as a natural dye for textiles, food, and ritual purposes due to its intense color—in some regions, it was even considered “sacred yellow.”

History and traditional significance of the two plants

Both plants have a long history in traditional botany. Milk thistle was already described in ancient times and was considered a typical plant of sunny, dry landscapes, where it was valued for its resilience. Turmeric has a tradition dating back thousands of years in Asian cultures, where it played a significant role both as a spice and as a dye. Together, these plants symbolize diversity, deep-rooted traditions, and a long history of using herbs and roots.

Key ingredients

The plants used contain a wide variety of natural compounds. Relevant groups include:

Flavonolignans (e.g., silymarin complex in milk thistle)
Curcuminoids (e.g., curcumin in turmeric)
Essential oils (e.g., turmerone in turmeric)
Bitter compounds (e.g., in milk thistle)
Phenolic compounds (e.g., in both plants)

The content of these substances is subject to natural fluctuations.

"Cleansing set" – Sagrusan

Plant parts used:
For our tinctures, we use the root of organic turmeric and the seeds of organic milk thistle.

Manufacturing instructions:
Our tinctures are carefully produced in our Austrian facility according to the alchemical principles of Paracelsus. This process allows us to extract a broad spectrum of the plant’s natural compounds.

Quality features:

Vegan and free from artificial additives.
Free of preservatives.
Free of artificial colors.
Bottled in high-quality amber glass (50/100 ml) for optimal protection.

Why use it as a tincture?

The tincture concentrates soluble plant compounds and makes them available for a longer period of time. Alcohol serves as both an extractant and a preservative and has the major advantage of extracting water- and fat-soluble compounds from the plant. These, in turn, are absorbed quickly and directly through the mucous membranes—ideal even in cases of impaired absorption. An alcohol-free version often cannot extract this range of compounds in the same way.
