Description
Looking at curcuma root, it is not surprising that the plant belongs to the ginger family. Another name by which curcuma is known is "Indian turmeric".
Curcuma is native to India and Southeast Asia. Since it is becoming more and more important, it is cultivated on a large scale, especially in the tropics.
The curcuma plant is a perennial plant, which can grow between 40 and 100cm high. The rootstock of the curcuma is resembling the rootstock of the ginger plant, with the difference that it is strongly orange coloured, smaller and narrower. The flowers of the curcuma are white in colour and quite unremarkable.
Did you know that the curcuma already played a major role in the Middle Ages? At that time it was used to dye materials.
Ginseng belongs to the Aralia family. Besides the name ginseng, it is also often called "power root".
Ginseng is native to northern China, Korea and Siberia. Nowadays it is cultivated worldwide, for example in Central Europe. Due to its increasing popularity, the plant is in great demand and can barely be found in the wild. But growing the plant can be very difficult, because it is a forest plant that tolerates only little sun.
The "power root" is a perennial herbaceous plant that can reach a height of 30 to 60cm. The root consists of one or two bundles of cylindrical roots. At the top of the stems grow its three to six leaves with strongly serrated edges. Each ginseng plant forms an inflorescence with 30 to 50 flowers.
Funnily enough, in China ginseng is also called "human root" because the appearance of the rootstock is reminds of the humans body.
The Siberian Ginseng, which is still quite unknown in our latitudes, belongs to the Aralia family.
Originally, the plant comes from Siberia, which is why it is called "Siberian ginseng". Meanwhile, the plant also grows naturally in eastern Russia, Korea, Japan, as well as eastern China. Especially in mountainous regions, which are rich in conifers, the plant is mainly found.
Botanically, the Siberian Ginseng is a shrub that can grow at least 1.5 meters and at maximum 7 meters high. The deciduous shrub has a widely branched root system with a large number of root fibers. The leaves are mint green and oval shaped and the flowers are usually yellow in colour.
Have you ever heard that the Siberian Ginseng was used by Russian athletes as a support in the 1984 Olympics?
Artemisia annua is a member of the composite plant family. The plant is also known to many as "annual mugwort".
Artemisia-annua is native to warm summer rainfall areas from China through northern India and Iraq to southeastern Europe. In Germany, Artemisia-annua grows along the Elbe River.
As the name "annual mugwort" suggests, it is an annual plant that can grow to a height of up to 2 meters in summer. Although its stem is usually completely bare, it has many side shoots that produce yellow, cup-shaped flowers when in bloom. In addition, its leaves resemble bright green feathers.
Worth mentioning: The best-known ingredient in annual mugwort is the so-called artemisin, the extraction of which helped Chinese pharmacologist Youyou Tu win the Nobel Prize in 2015.
There are up to 2500 nettle types that all belong to the nettle family.
Nettle plants can be found all over the world - except in Antarctica, because the plant does not grow there. Originally, the nettle originates from Central Europe, but over the time it has spread to Northern Europe, Asia and North America.
The stinging nettle is familiar to most people - it is recognized by its heart-shaped leaves with toothed edges. The nettle can reach a height up to 150cm. It is a perennial, resistant plant, which is known to irritate the skin when touched. This is due to the stinging hair on the leaves and stem. For this reason, the nettle is not very appreciated and is considered by many to be an annoying weed.
Did you know the reason for the stinging hair on the plant? It is because they serve as protection from predators. The stinging bristles are filled with formic acid and when you touch the plant, this acid is released and causes unpleasant stings.
Most people probably know dandelion. It belongs to the dandelion species, which in turn belongs to the composite plant family.
Dandelion grows naturally in the moderate climate zones of the northern hemisphere, but originally comes from western Asia and Europe. It is most likely to be found on meadows, ditches, and forest edges - as long as it is sunny or half-shady.
The growth of the dandelion is herbaceous. The perennial plant can only grow between 10 to 30 cm high, but its root is very long and reaches up to one meter in the depth. Directly above the ground, the dandelion leaves are formed, which grow up to 25cm and are strongly toothed. In spring, the dandelion blooms with its bright yellow basket flowers, whose smell reminds of honey. The flowers open in the morning and close in the evening.
Interesting, especially for vegans: You can make a honey alternative from dandelion.
