Description
Looking at the curcuma root, it is not surprising that the plant belongs to the ginger family. Another name by which the curcuma is known is "Indian turmeric".
Curcuma is native to India and Southeast Asia. Since it is becoming more and more important, it is cultivated on a large scale, especially in the tropics.
The curcuma plant is a perennial plant, which can grow between 40 and 100cm high. The rootstock of the curcuma is resembling the rootstock of the ginger plant, with the difference that it is strongly orange coloured, smaller and narrower. The flowers of the curcuma are white in colour and quite unremarkable.
Did you know that the curcuma already played a major role in the Middle Ages? At that time it was used to dye materials.
