Description
Common wormwood, often called green ginger or absinthe wormwood, belongs to the genus of mugwort species within the composite family. It is related Artemisia annua, for example.
It is native to southern Europe, Asia and North America. Nowadays, the herb is known worldwide and has spread globally through humans. It grows naturally in dry, poor soils that contain a lot of sand and clay. It can withstand the blazing sun very well, but also thrives in semi-shade places.
Wormwood is a half-shrub, which means that it only lignifies at the bottom. Its growth is upright and the shrub can reach about one meter of growth height. The root of the wormwood lies horizontally in the ground and from this the individual shoots of the plant arise. The characteristic feature of the wormwood shrub is its tart and spicy fragrance. On the stems sit the delicate, feathery leaves close together. The leaves are gray to silvery in color. The flowers of the wormwood are rather unimpressive and yellow coloured and open between July and September.
You certainly know the alcoholic drink absinthe, but did you know that it is made of wormwood? Additionally, wormwood gives the characteristic taste to the Martini cocktail.
The clove comes from the clove tree, which belongs to the myrtle family.
Originally, the tree comes from the Moluccas, also known as the Spice Islands, because there is a proper climate for the clove tree. Since the clove is a very popular spice, the tree is cultivated worldwide, but they feel most comfortable in the tropical maritime climate.
The evergreen tree grows up to 10 meters high. Its leaves are leathery, rich green and egg-shaped. The popular spice is extracted from the flower buds of the tree. This means that even before flowering, the flowers are collected and dried.
Did you know how to identify good quality cloves? If they leave a film of oil on your fingers when you touch them, it means that they are rich in essential oils and therefore of high quality.
A relative of the walnut, the black walnut belongs to the walnut family, which includes about 60 species.
The black walnut is native to the eastern countries of the USA and parts of Canada. Since the 17th century, however, the tree has spread all over the world and is even the most commonly planted species of the walnut family in our country.
It is a deciduous tree that can grow to an impressive height of 20 to 30 meters. In some cases, under perfect growing conditions, the tree can even reach 50 meters height. The trees crown is round and loosely structured, and its diameter can reach a width of 30 meters. Also the trunk of the tree can reach a circumference of several meters. The bark of the tree is dark brown to almost black and is heavily wrinkled. The leaves can also become quite large, almost 60 cm long to be exact, and have serrated edges. As is typical for broadleaf trees, the leaves of the black walnut also turn yellow in fall. The fruits of the tree are actually stone fruits, but they are called nuts. A green shell forms around the fruit, which turns dark as they fall off the tree. The shell rots first and the fruit appears.
You want to know if the nut can be eaten? Yes, the nuts can be consumed, but they cannot compete with the taste of walnuts.
