Description
The mate shrub or mate tree belongs to the holly family.
It originally comes from South America, where it can be found in Brazil, Paraguay and Argentina, among other places. In its native country, the shrub either grows wild or is cultivated. It feels most at home in mild climates.
The mate plant is an evergreen shrub that can grow to a considerable height of 15 metres. It is strongly branched and has an oval tree crown. Its leaves are very strong, their edge serrated and extremely aromatic. The flowers are greenish to white and differ in the number of petals - the male flowers have many more petals.
Did you know that the popular national drink mate tea is made from the mate plant? In its countries of origin, the drink is an important means of communication and stands for friendship.
Ginger is probably the best-known species and eponym of the ginger family.
It is not known exactly where ginger originally comes from. However, it is thought to have come from the Pacific islands. It is now widely cultivated, especially in the tropics of Asia, in parts of Africa and South America, and in Jamaica. Accordingly, it grows best in warm and sunny locations and in nutrient-rich soil.
It is known for its thick, fleshy roots, from which annual shoots can form that grow 60 to 100 cm high. These shoots in turn develop the flowers of the ginger plant. The leaves of ginger are rather narrow and resemble bamboo leaves.
Did you know that ginger translates as "antler-shaped"? In fact, the shape of the ginger root resembles that of antlers.
One of the best-known herbs in Europe is probably the peppermint. It belongs to the labiates family and is closely related to basil, sage or rosemary.
Peppermint is thought to have originated in East Asia. Over the years, however, it has spread worldwide and grows wild in many countries. The most important areas where mint is grown are, for example, Greece, England and Spain. Peppermint does not thrive well in very sunny areas; semi-shady locations are more suitable.
The popular plant grows herbaceously and is so resistant that it can survive the winter with its cool temperatures. Peppermint can grow 25 to 100 cm high and also has a shallow root system with many runners. They also contain oil glands, which are responsible for the scent of peppermint. The flowers can also vary in colour - there are pink, purple and white petals.
An interesting fact about peppermint: the English sailors used peppermint to keep their water fresh longer on long journeys.
Most people probably know dandelion. It belongs to the dandelion species, which belongs to the composite plant family.
The dandelion grows naturally in the moderate climate zones of the northern hemisphere, but originally comes from western Asia and Europe. It is most likely to be found on meadows, ditches, and forest edges - as long as it is sunny or half-shady.
The growth of the dandelion is herbaceous. The perennial plant can only grow between 10 to 30 cm high, but its root is very long and reaches up to one meter in the depth. Directly above the ground, the dandelion leaves are formed, which grow up to 25cm and are strongly toothed. In spring, the dandelion blooms with its bright yellow basket flowers, whose smell reminds of honey. The flowers open in the morning and close in the evening.
Interesting, especially for vegans, could be that you can make a honey alternative from the dandelion.
